Carpets Sale: Massimo Borrelli

The tradition of textile weaving is considered one of the most representative forms of Sardinian cultural heritage. Today the weaving of textiles is an art carefully preserved and widespread commercially, while in the past centuries it was one of the most important activities Sardinian women carried out at home and, for them, an important source of profit to support the family.

Thus the art of textile weaving was handed on from generation to generation as a patrimony of both economic and artistic value.

The skilled and careful job of the weaver is the real secret of this long tradition, which evolved in time and arrived to us as we know it, thanks to the experience of our closest foremothers.

Up to a few generations ago, in the Sardinian houses (domus), the weavers used to make the bridal trousseau for the girls of the house and, at the same time, they taught their art of weaving handing on the precious art to their daughters. This is the way our company was born: following our family tradition.

The typical traditional woven articles include: carpets, tapestries, furniture mats and saddle bags. The main purpose of woven articles was originally to provide coverings for the austere wooden chest used to contain the bride’s trousseau and other household riches. This original use justifies the form, generally being represented by a section depicting geometric figures and designs with two lateral flaps which were intended as an ornate detail.

Up to 30, 40 years ago, it was still possible to visit the island villages of long tradition in textile weaving, and see nearly all women standing at their wooden loom working at their carpet. Nowadays only a small part of this scenery survives.

Our commitment is keeping alive the unique and precious culture of the textile weaving through our workshop that, with a careful work and faithful to the tradition, follows the teachings of our grandmothers.
